Wiltshire's landscape is inextricably bound up with the rocks beneath the surface. It is our aim to raise public awareness of Earth Sciences and draw peoples attention to the way the landscape, and the towns and villages within it, are influenced by the underlying geology.
English Heritage has a major project running across the country, looking at important (listed) stone buildings and Conservation Areas. Wiltshire has been contributing since 2009. It has involved providing details of building stones, their sources (mostly now-abandoned quarries) and a review of Wiltshire villages selected to demonstrate use of stone across the county. All this data will be 'published' on the English Heritage website along with an atlas of building stones for the whole country.
