Wiltshire's landscape is inextricably bound up with the rocks beneath the surface. It is our aim to raise public awareness of Earth Sciences and draw peoples attention to the way the landscape, and the towns and villages within it, are influenced by the underlying geology.

Pewsey Vale Landscape and Geology Trail Guide

This project was funded by the North Wessex Downs Sustainable Development Fund and Kennet District Council, the aim being to promote the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and raise awareness of geodiversity amongst the general public.

A lovely geology and landscape guide for the Vale of Pewsey was produced in 2008 to interpret the landscape of this beautiful area, encouraging people to go out and explore not just the local geology, but also the history dating back to prehistoric times and the stone used in the buildings.
Printed on glossy weather-resistant card and concertina-folded to make a 12 page pocket-sized pamphlet, this landscape companion encompasses the Vale of Pewsey which runs for some 15 miles (24km) east of Devizes between Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs. Clear maps make it easy to find sites mentioned in the text, which concentrates on how the underlying rocks have affected both the landscape and people.

It can be purchased for £1.95 from local tourist outlets, Wiltshire Museum, Devizes, or online / by mail-order (adding a £1.50 handling charge) from www.thematic-trails.org or THEMATIC TRAILS, 7 Norwood Avenue, Kingston Bagpuize, Oxfordshire, OX13 5AD Tel: 01865-820522.

The guide is one of a series of Landscape and Geology Trails produced by the Wiltshire geology Group. Click here to see complete list.
